Seachem KanaPlex
KanaPlex is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that contains kanamycin and is used to treat a wide range of bacterial and fungal infections in aquarium fish. It is effective for conditions such as dropsy, popeye, fin and tail rot, and septicemia. One of its key advantages is that it is readily absorbed through the skin and gills, which makes it suitable for fish that have stopped eating. KanaPlex does not harm the beneficial biological filter and can be easily removed after treatment using activated carbon.
KanaPlex is commonly used to treat internal bacterial infections, especially when fish refuse food. It can also be mixed with food for targeted treatment, which is especially useful in tanks that contain sensitive invertebrates. The product is suitable for both freshwater and marine aquariums.
KanaPlex is gentle on beneficial bacteria in the filter bed and can be used either directly in the water or mixed with food. When combined with products like Focus, GarlicGuard, or Entice, its effectiveness and food acceptance improve significantly. After completing the treatment, the medication can be fully removed by adding activated carbon.
For water dosing, remove all invertebrates, stop UV sterilizers, ozone, and chemical filtration, then dose one included scoop per 20 liters of water. Repeat every 48 hours for up to three doses. For food dosing, mix one scoop of KanaPlex with one scoop of Focus and one tablespoon of food. Add a few drops of water if needed to help the powder bind, and optionally mix GarlicGuard or Entice to enhance palatability. Refrigerate or freeze any prepared medicated food between feedings.
During treatment, avoid using chemical filter media as they will reduce the medication’s effectiveness. It is recommended to use a hospital tank when possible, especially for severe bacterial conditions such as columnaris. Always monitor fish closely throughout the treatment period, as many diseases can share similar visual symptoms.
